Happy Wednesday, Word Nerds! I have a very short word for you today that I came across in a manuscript I’m editing. It’s not a particularly glamorous word, and I’ve heard it used in various forms before, but I’d never heard it used in the context I found it in, so I looked it up. ย The word?

duff

Notย duffer, as in a silly person (which isย the form of the word I’ve most frequently heard used), and not as in up-the-duff (who came up with that phrase, anyway?) but simply duff.

Maybe it’s just not used in Australia, which would explain my ignorance nicely ๐Ÿ™‚ , but I discovered there are several possible meanings for this word (either as a noun or an adjective, although the latter is British usage). So I’m throwing it open to you this week and asking:

What do you think it means?

It’s quite possible you know what it means, in which case, why not share a sentence with us demonstrating its usage? If not, give it your best and most creative guess! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ll be back next week to share the answer with you all. Until then . . .

Happy Reading ๐Ÿ™‚
