Okay, we’re going to have some fun on Word Nerd Wednesday today!  I’ve just finished reading the second book in Sandra Orchard’s Serena Jones series: Another Day, Another Dali.*  (It’s a fabulous series, if you haven’t read it yet.)

In the novels there is a minor character—a neighbour of Serena’s—who loves to help expand people’s vocabularies by giving them a ‘word of the day’ to incorporate into everyday speech. And he comes up with some doozies!  One of the words he comes out with is ‘slangwhanger’.  I admit it: I got the giggles.  I mean, who comes up with these words, anyway?  But it is a real word, with a real meaning (and if you’ve read the book, you may remember what that is).

What I want to know is: What do you think it means?

Now, obviously, you could Google it and be a total party pooper.  Please don’t do that!  I want you to put your creative hat on and come up with your own definition.  Even if you do Google it (you did hear me say ‘party pooper’, right?) see if you can come up with a creative definition of your own.  Next week, I’ll give you the low down on what it really means, but in the meantime, let’s have some fun!

What do you think ‘Slangwhanger’ means?  How would you use it in a sentence?

Happy reading! 😊

  1. Slangwhanger: a machine that sends birdies over the net in a solo game of lawn tennis. i.e. – The slangwhanger is the very latest technology in lawn tennis solitaire.

  2. Janet W. Ferguson

I commented on my phone, but it disappears. My guess, someone who doesn’t talk properly.

  3. Wow, I invented the character and I don’t even remember him coming up with the word. I clearly didn’t use it in a sentence to help me remember!!! So happy to hear you’re enjoying the series.
