Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, book lovers! This week’s topic from the girls at The Broke and the Bookish is ‘New-to-me Authors I Read in 2017’. Folks, I found some FANTASTIC new-to-me authors in 2017, and they are all—without exception—on my ‘must read’ list now. Who are these writers, you ask? Allow me to introduce you!
Karen Barnett
I was part of Karen Barnett’s launch team for The Road to Paradise in June 2017, which have me my first taste of Karen’s writing. The setting came to life, particularly the trek up Mount Rainier at the end of the book, and I loved the main characters too. I will definitely be reading the next in this series, Where the Fire Falls, when it releases in June 2018! Read my review
Patricia Beal’s debut novel, A Season to Dance, released in May 2017 and, having a daughter who is an aspiring ballerina herself, I was both keen and nervous about reading this one. Keen, because I loved the setting, but nervous because . . . well, debut author. What if it didn’t live up to my hopes? No fear there. This one exceeded my hopes, and I hope there’s more to come from this author. Read my review
I first discovered Christina Coryell when I read her novella Mowed Over in the Love at First Laugh novella collection. The collection isn’t available any more, but you can buy the novellas individually, and I strongly recommend getting this one. I also strongly recommend anything Christina Coryell has ever written. 🙂 Particularly Written in the Stars and Written in the Dust.
Okay, so I know I’m a little late to this party, but Katie Ganshert’s 2017 release, Life After, was my first taste of her writing, and it won’t be my last. The best thing about finding an established author, though? BACKLIST! 🙂 And, of course, there’s her 2018 release, No One Ever Asked, which looks like being another great one. Read my review
I only recently finished reading the first book in April’s Creek Country Saga, and I am hooked. I put the boxed set of the first three books in the series on my Christmas wish list, and I’m pleased to say I now have it my hot little hands (or, at least, on my hot little Kindle!) I can’t wait to read the rest of Adela and Totka’s story. Read my review
Carolyn Miller is another debut author for 2017, with THREE books releasing in her Regency Brides series. The first one I read was The Elusive Miss Ellison, however it was the second book in the series that really sealed the deal for me: The Captivating Lady Charlotte. If you love Regency romance in the style of Heyer and Austen, then you definitely need to check out Carolyn Miller.

The novella First Light was enough to let me know that I was going to love this new author (also a debut author for 2017). Out of Darkness simply proved my instincts correct. Elisabeth is a bride and a widow in one day, and the story only gets more compelling from there!
This book was recommended to me by a friend, and it happened to come at a time when I was in the mood for something that would make me laugh. So I picked it up. And didn’t put it down until I was finished! Oh, man, was this book funny. As in, my husband could hear me laughing from a few rooms away and asked if I was okay. Well, if gasping for breath amidst convulsive laughter is okay, I’d never been better! Can’t wait for more from this mother-daughter duo. Read my review
While we’re on the subject of romantic comedy, The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck is another of this year’s gems. Navigating life as a new Christian is difficult enough when you’re famous for writing one of those kinds of romance novels, but it becomes a whole new level of complicated when you fall in love with the pastor of your church. Both witty and insightful, and ensuring I will make a bee-line for Bethany Turner’s next release. Read my review
Jaime Jo Wright’s first full-length novel was an absolute winner for me: A fabulous romantic suspense (emphasis on the suspense!) with a Gothic feel to it. If you like your suspense to give you prickles up the back of the neck, this is the one to grab! Read my review
Roseanna M. White, Julianna Deering, Pepper Basham, and Cathe Swanson–almost. Actually, it was the end of 2016, but her first full-length novel is what won me over as a new favorite.
It’s funny about ‘new to me authors’. The first time I met Pepper Basham, I thought she was already published because I’d seen her around ‘the net’ so much! I love seeing new authors with great successes, and I’m excited to finally read The House on Foster Hill. My secret passion for fiction is anything with a gothic feel. (I’ve written three. They may need to come out of mothballs!) Congratulations to all listed here. Karen Barnett might have had the breakout ‘cover’ of the year, imo! As much as I’m a sucker for historical dresses on the cover, I LOVED that travel poster style!
I’ve read several of these and loved them. I also loved Joanna Davidson Politano’s Lady Jayne Disappears, Courtney Walsh, Teresa Tysinger, Krista Phillips, Mikal Dawn, Debra Marvin, Liz Johnson, Susie Finkbeiner. I’d better stop there before I put you to sleep with my list! So many amazing authors!
I still have to read Mikal’s! And Lady Jayne Disappears is on my try-to-get-to-it-in-2018 list 😆 Oh, and Susie Finkbeiner. I really want to read hers too!
