~ Excerpt ~

I went to the foyer hall bench and coat tree to retrieve my jacket. Within a moment, Travis opened the door, letting in a blast of cold air. “Hey, Mom.” He pulled a wool cap from his head, which sent his straight blond hair in all directions.

I slid my arms into my coat sleeves. “Hey, yourself. Good day?”

“Pretty good. Where are you going?”

I plastered on a smile. “I just need to tell your dad something.”

His face went blank. “Y’all aren’t going to fight again, are you?”

Squeezing his lips together between my pressing fingers, I teased, “No-we-aren’t-going-to-fight-again.” Releasing his face, I added, “We’ve done more than fight over the years, you know. How do you think you got here?”

Mock horror crossed his face. “Eww, Mom, don’t even joke about things like that.” He overexaggerated the willies as he shrugged out of his coat.

I laughed easily on my way out the door. Hank was halfway up the steps as Jackson watched him from his truck. He’d already opened the driver’s door and had one foot perched on the running board. Seeing me, he jutted his chin upward and said, “Hey.”

“Hold on,” I told him. “I need to tell you something.”

Hank looked up at me with the same look Travis had given me moments before, wondering if Mommy and Daddy were going to fight again. “Go on inside,” I told him quietly. “It’s okay.”

The front door closed behind me as Jackson shut his truck’s to keep the heat inside, then took his familiar pose—feet braced apart, arms folded. Refusing to be challenged, I rubbed my hands together to fight off the cold and smiled. “Hey,” I said, stopping close enough to him to keep our conversation between the two of us, but far enough away not to appear intimate. “I just wanted you to know that Christmas Eve is fine with me. You’re right. We don’t have years to alternate with family anymore.”

Jackson’s brow shot up. “I’m what?”

I gave him my best aren’t-you-cute look. “Very funny.”

He relaxed and leaned against the truck’s door, crossing his legs at the ankles. “No, no,” he teased. “Say that again. Because I’m sure I didn’t hear you the first time.” He leaned his ear toward me in mock deafness. “I’m what?”

I frowned. “You were right,” I said slowly. “There now. Are you happy?”

Seriousness relaxed his smile. “Not entirely, but that’ll do for a start.”

I like the idea of a story at Christmastime that highlights the idea of forgiveness. I know of so many families who spend their lives apart for some slight.
