Once Upon an Irish Summer

About the Book

You Can’t Embrace Your Future Until You Deal With Your Past…

Fiona Burke has long been obsessed with Ireland’s famed, sixteenth-century pirate queen, Grace O’Malley. Now that she’s on the final stretch of earning her PhD in history, all she needs to do is finish her dissertation—with Grace O’Malley as her subject—then return home to Boston to defend it. Once that’s done she can compete for a highly coveted history professor position.

Fiona arrives in western Ireland aiming to interview the locals and find additional folklore to flesh out her work. But when she encounters Grace’s distant relative—the handsome, commanding Rory O’Malley—she gets seriously distracted. Rory shares her passion for history and Ireland, and cares for his grandfather and great-uncle in a winsome way. Unfortunately he also carries wounds beyond his injured leg…wounds that threaten to dismantle every little bit of a relationship that he and Fiona begin to build.

As a famed TV host becomes intrigued with Fiona—as well as convinced she should do guest appearances on his show—Rory starts to figure out that he might be as interested in his own personal romantic future as he is in Ireland’s epic past. But can he take the steps toward the healing he needs before it’s too late? It all remains to be seen…Once Upon an Irish Summer.

Excerpt

“It’s good you have Rory this summer,” she said.
The old man took a sip and gazed pensively out the window. “Aye. For now. There’s no tellin’ where that lad’s heart will take him. But it helps that he has every summer off. Gives him ample time to return to me.”
“He comes every summer? For the whole summer?”
Patrick met her gaze. “He didn’t tell ya? He’s a teacher. History.” Was it her imagination, or did his eyes twinkle when he said that?
    “H-history? No. He didn’t say.” So he’s a medic-mechanic-teacher…
“Ach, well, ye’ll likely have lots to discuss in the comin’ months. Ye’re here to research our own Grace O’Malley, aren’t ya?”
    “I am.”
“Well then, ya have a livin’ breathin’ source right out yonder in our barn. Rory’s been researching ol’ Gracie since he was a lad, given that she’s kin.”
She considered him a moment. “Kin by what? Fifteen generations?”
“Give or take,” he said with a nod, sipping more tea.
She narrowed her eyes. She was beginning to see what the old man might be up to. “Patrick, just so we’re clear. I’m here to finish my dissertation. Not find a boyfriend.”
His bushy eyebrows rose. “So ye’re against having a boyfriend?”
Well, not against it. I just don’t need one right now. If you were thinking that Rory and I—”
“I had no further thought than this…Ye have a shared love of history. Who doesn’t like a new friend who has a similar passion? And my grandson…” He set down his cup on the table, leaned forward and tapped his fingers together. “He’s had a rough go of it for a time.”
She didn’t want to give the man false hope. Clearly he was matchmaking. But curiosity forced her to delve in a bit. “He’s been injured…”
“Aye, in more than one way,” he said, rising with his cup in hand to place it in the sink. “But again, that’s my own Rory’s story to tell, not mine.”

Review

If you can’t get to the Emerald Isle in person, a book is the next best thing—specifically, Once Upon an Irish Summer.  Add in some historical research (on location, of course), a little bit of mystery, and a handsome Irish farmer and you’ve got the ideal getaway! And that’s what this read was. A lovely getaway for a few hours as I visited with Fiona, Rory, and his grandda and got tangled in their mishaps, successes, and the romance that gently unfolded.

Fiona Burke was a winsome heroine with a spritely combination of intelligence and enthusiasm that only occasionally led her astray. Rory was her more reserved complement, a man bearing wounds both physical and emotional, and I enjoyed watching Fiona draw him out of himself as they got to know one another. Rory’s grandda was a great addition to the cast, too, and Bergren did an excellent job of conveying their lilting brogue without making it too distracting for the reader.

TV host Kiernan Kelly added an interesting element to the story, and although there were times I thought I knew what would happen next, my suspicions fell through as often as not. That not only increased my engagement in the story but kept me guessing a little at how certain elements would play out.

In short, if you’re in the mood for a romantic getaway to Ireland, Once Upon an Irish Summer is your ticket!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

  1. If money were no object, I would go visit my mom in New Zealand for the Summer. That would be a bonus because it would be winter in the USA, lol!
