Mr. Baron is helping Mrs. Baron with her wrap, and the boys are lost in a conversation of their own.
“Grace, you were divine tonight,” Mrs. Baron says.
“Thanks. I have to say, Mrs. Baron, you were great during the ‘Watermelon Crawl.’”
I do a sassy, little cha-cha step. Mrs. Baron looks delighted and laughs a little. “Let’s go to our rooms. We’re all tired. And tomorrow, we have to be at the press conference pretty early.”
With how busy we were, I had almost forgotten about being invited to join Noelle tomorrow for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new watermelon nursery. It houses thousands of tiny seedlings. Eventually, they’ll be shipped all over the country to agricultural centers. We’ll get a tour of the greenhouses and the packing plant before Noelle cuts the ribbon.

April Smith grew up spending summers working on her best friend’s family watermelon farm and she was one of those watermelon queens she writes about. She has her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching.
