First Line Friday – Verity (Lisa T. Bergren)

Happy Friday, book lovers, and welcome to another First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books. If you’re a lover of historical fiction, I think you’re going to love the book I’m sharing with you today. Verity is the second book in Lisa T. Bergren’s series The Sugar Baron’s Daughters, set in the West Indies in the 1770s. What a setting, right? But it’s a great plot too. If you’d like to read my review, you can find it here, but for now, let’s have a look at that first line!

About the Book

After leaving England behind for a new life in the West Indies with her sisters, Verity Banning wants something to call her own. Her affinity for animals inspires her to set up a business importing horses, as well as other goods in demand by the island residents. But when she arrives in the Colonies to purchase her goods, unexpected news of Captain Duncan McKintrick awaits her–as does the captain’s handsome brother, Ian–whose sympathies lie with the fledgling Patriot cause.

As the great-granddaughter of a British general and friend to many Loyalists, Verity believed all she wanted was a peaceful resolution. But both the Patriots and the impassioned Ian McKintrick are steadily laying claim to her heart. When faced with the decision of what–and for whom–she will fight, can she set her feet on a new path despite the danger that awaits?

  1. Happy Friday!

On my blog I am sharing the first couple of lines from Delicate Balance by Brooke St. James: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/04/04/first-line-friday-82/. It’s a really sweet book I highly recommend. Currently, I am reading A Silken Thread by Kim Vogel Sawyer, so I will share the first line from chapter 7.

“‘Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.’ Willie gave a little jolt. The preacher read on, but the second verse of Galatians 6 seemed to bounce off the wood-planked walls and echo in Willie’s mind.”

Hope you have a great weekend. Happy reading!

  2. Happy Friday! I’m sharing from Up from the Sea by Amanda Dykes on my blog today. This is the first line from my current read, In the Shadow of Croft Towers by Abigail Wilson:

“I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had never learned the truth.”
