First Line Friday – A Convenient Fiction (Mimi Matthews)

Posted 25 October 2019 by Katie in First Line Fridays, Historical, Romance / 11 Comments

Happy Friday, book lovers, and welcome to First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books. I’ve just started reading A Convenient Fiction, Mimi Matthews’ newest release in her Parish Orphans of Devon series, and am already in love with the story. I mean, first chapter, and we’ve already had lines like, “You weren’t swimming. You were floating beneath the water like some demented Ophelia.” 😂

About the Book

She Needed A Husband…

It’s been three years since Laura Hayes’s father died, leaving her and her invalid brother to subsist on the income from the family’s failing perfume business. But time is swiftly running out. What she needs is a husband, and fast. A noble gentleman who can rescue them all from penury. When a mysterious stranger arrives in the village, he seems a perfect candidate. But Alex Archer is no hero. In fact, he just might be the opposite.

He Wanted a Fortune…

Alex has no tolerance for sentiment. He’s returned to England for one reason only: to find a wealthy wife. A country-bred heiress in Surrey seems the perfect target. But somewhere between the village railway station and the manor house his mercenary plan begins to unravel. And it’s all the fault of Laura Hayes–a lady as unsuitable as she is enchanting.

From the beaches of Margate to the lavender fields of Provence, a grudging friendship slowly blossoms into something more. But when scandal threatens, can a man who has spent his entire life playing the villain, finally become a hero? Or will the lure of easy riches once again outweigh the demands of his heart?

  1. Sounds like a wonderful story. On my blog, I’m featuring The Elusive Miss Ellison by Carolyn Miller. Here, I will share the first line in Chapter Nine of my current read, It All Started at the Masquerade by Janice Cole Hopkins. Melanie awoke to find Gemona sitting beside her bed watching her.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. All the love for this story!!!!! I’m excited to hear your thoughts, Katie.

I just finished Like a Winter Snow by Lindsay Harrel, so I’ll share its first line: “If it were anyone but Sophia Barrett getting married, Joy Beckman wouldn’t dream of getting on a plane tomorrow.”

Happy Friday! My first line is from “The Wedding Dress Christmas” by Rachel Hauck:

“In the glow of the town’s newly strung Christmas lights, all her fears seemed to fade.”

  4. Katie, must you always tempt me so?! I’ve been itching to get my hands on a Mimi Matthews book and actually make time to read it. The struggle is real!

  5. Sorry I’m late to visiting this week. On my blog this week I shared the first line from Memories of Glass by Melanie Dobson but I just started reading Coral by Sara Ella so I’ll share the first line from chapter 2 here: “This is not my home.” Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
