Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! If you’re a nature lover, make sure you don’t miss the book I’m featuring this week: Karen Barnett’s new release Where the Fire Falls, set in Yosamite National Park. It released this Tuesday just past, and I’ll have my review up for you soon, but in the meantime, allow me to whet your appetite with the first line.

~ About the Book ~

Stunning Yosemite National Park sets the stage for this late 1920s historical romance with mystery, adventure, heart, and a sense of the place John Muir described as “pervaded with divine light.”

Watercolorist Olivia Rutherford has shed her humble beginnings to fashion her image as an avant-garde artist to appeal to the region’s wealthy art-collectors. When she lands a lucrative contract painting illustrations of Yosemite National Park for a travel magazine, including its nightly one-of-a-kind Firefall event, she hopes the money will lift Olivia and her sisters out of poverty.

After false accusations cost him everything, former minister Clark Johnson has found purpose as a backcountry guide in this natural cathedral of granite and trees. Now he’s faced with the opportunity to become a National Parks Ranger, but is it his true calling?

As Clark opens Olivia’s eyes to the wonders of Yosemite, she discovers the people are as vital to the park’s story as its vistas–a revelation that may bring her charade to an end.

~ First Line ~

Olivia Rutherford applied lip rouge the same way she painted—with bold, broad strokes. Anything to distract from the truth.

How does that line grab you? 😉

I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. 1. This one is calling to me from my nightstand. I can’t wait to get to it!

I’m actually sharing Karen’s Beyond the Ashes over on my blog, so here I’ll share my favorite line from a book I recently enjoyed, The Story Peddler by Lindsay A. Franklin:

Did he really stand by me if he didn’t love all of me, if he wanted me to lock up my passions, dreams, and hopes – my gift – and be what he wanted me to be instead?

  2. Sounds like an interesting historical novel.
I’m sharing Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows’ “My Plain Jane” on my blog today, which I read a couple of weeks ago, so I’m going to share this line instead from an anthology I’m currently reading.
“Do not trust the fruit of Maria Makiling.”
This one is from the first short story in the anthology edited by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman, “A Thousand Beginnings and Endings”
    Have a great weekend! 😀

I’m looking forward to binge read this series! 😉

My #FLF is from Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  4. This is another wonderful book from Karen! I enjoyed reading this story!

Over on my blog I’m featuring Among The Poppies by J’Nell Ciesielski. Here I’ll share the first line from Chapter 22.
“The wrench spun like a dial, blurring faster and faster until it flew off the side of the engine and cartwheeled in the dirt.”

  5. Happy Friday!

I’m so behind with my TBR pile that it will take me forever before I get to Karen’s book. I love the cover and the opening lines make me want to push this book to the top of the pile.

My FLF this week on my blog is Love in the Balance by Regina Jennings. I’m also reading Head in the Clouds by Karen Witemeyer.

    Cisco, Texas – April 1883
“Tonight is the night. She could feel it.”

    Have a great weekend!

  6. I’m currently reading Where the Fire Falls and loving it! I’m sharing from the prologue of another current read, King’s Folly by Jill Williamson, on my blog today, so here I’ll share from the first chapter:

“A procession of fifty men made their way through the cool desert night from the royal retreat in Canden toward The Gray. Fifty-one men, technically, though the king did not count the wailing convict riding in the cage since the man would soon be dead.”

Happy reading and have a great weekend!

  7. Love it!

Today’s first lines come from Kat Mizera’s new release, Defending Dani. This was a super sweet and emotional hockey romance.

“Sergei Petrov got out of the taxi and hurriedly paid the drive as he grabbed his bag. He hadn’t seen his son in more than two months and couldn’t wait to look into his sweet little face.”

I’m featuring lines from Lexi Blake’s new release “Order of Protection” on my blog. Check out to see the start of her newest series!

  8. Loved this book!!! 😊

    Happy Friday!

Today on my blog, I’m sharing the first paragraph to This Wilderness Journey by Misty Beller. Here I will share the first two lines from the book I’m currently reading, I Am My Beloved by Caryl McAdoo. It’s a retelling of Song of Solomon.

“Abishag held the cups level and took small ladylike steps, careful not to slosh. She grinned then placed the wine — except water really, her mother wouldn’t allow her real wine — on the stone table.”

Hope you have an excellent weekend with lots of quality reading time! 😁

  9. I’ve heard a lot of awesome things about this book! 🙂
The Book I’m sharing on my blog is Lone Witness by Rachel Dylan but I’m currently listening to The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and I’ll share the first line from that here: “We slept in what had once been the gymnasium.” Happy reading this weekend! 🙂

  10. I have a copy waiting for me as soon as I get through my review commitments. 😀
I’m sharing about The Weaver’s Daughter by Sarah E. Ladd on my blog today. I’m currently reading Just Look Up by Courtney Walsh so I’ll share the first line from that here:

    “He shouldn’t be here.”

    Happy weekend! 😀

  11. This cover reminds me of a movie poster. I haven’t read anything by Karen before but have heard good things.
I am going to share with you the first line of my current read, The House at Saltwater Point by Colleen Coble. “Two construction workers carried in the orange ladder splatted with dried paint blotches and old drywall mud.”
