Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! I just finished reading the book I’m sharing with you today: Hidden in the Stars by Melanie Dobson. And I have to say, it was completely spellbinding. This is a time-slip novel (meaning it has a historical and a contemporary story) but if you love WWII fiction, I highly recommend checking this out. You can read my review here.

~ About the Book ~

From the award-winning author of Catching the Wind, which Publishers Weekly called “unforgettable” and a “must-read,” comes another gripping time-slip novel about hidden treasure, a castle, and ordinary people who resisted evil in their own extraordinary way.

The year is 1938, and as Hitler’s troops sweep into Vienna, Austrian Max Dornbach promises to help his Jewish friends hide their most valuable possessions from the Nazis, smuggling them to his family’s summer estate near the picturesque village of Hallstatt. He enlists the help of Annika Knopf, his childhood friend and the caretaker’s daughter, who is eager to help the man she’s loved her entire life. But when Max also brings Luzia Weiss, a young Jewish woman, to hide at the castle, it complicates Annika’s feelings and puts their entire plan—even their very lives—in jeopardy. Especially when the Nazis come to scour the estate and find both Luzia and the treasure gone.

Eighty years later, Callie Randall is mostly content with her quiet life, running a bookstore with her sister and reaching out into the world through her blog. Then she finds a cryptic list in an old edition of Bambi that connects her to Annika’s story . . . and maybe to the long-buried story of a dear friend. As she digs into the past, Callie must risk venturing outside the safe world she’s built for a chance at answers, adventure, and maybe even new love.

LAKE HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA
MARCH 1938

The blade of a shovel, cutting through frosted grass. That’s what she remembered most from the spring of 1938.

Doesn’t that give you shivers?

I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. 1. I finished Hidden in The Stars a few days ago. Dobson is a must-read author for me, and I think this book has to be my all-time favorite! I am featuring Dani Pettrey’s novella, Deadly Isle, over on the blog. But here I will share my current read, Fit to Be Tied by Debby Mayne. “As soon as my Fitbit vibrates, letting me know that Thomas Flaherty is calling, I mentally kick myself for forgetting to disengage that feature when I turned off my ringer.”

Happy Friday! My first line is from How to Make Victoria Sponge by Margaret Kazmierczak.

“Monday, six-fifteen in the morning and the alarm wakes me up for a new day.”

  3. Happy Friday!😎

My first lines come from a book I’m reading next, In Her Bones by Kate Moretti.

Your life is more open than you think. You think you’re safe. You have neighborhood watches and room -darkening drapes, password-protected computers, alarm systems, and garage codes that are absolutely not your firstborn’s birthday.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!😊💕

  4. I’m featuring Michelle Griep’s new novella, A Tale of Two Hearts, on my blog today. Here is the second line:

“Closing her eyes, she savored the warmth and the first line to a new adventure, as was her wont whenever Miss Whymsy stopped by and lent her a book.”

    Happy Friday!

  5. Awesome book choice today! I shared my review of it today as part of a tour but I read it last month. LOVED it!
The Book I’m sharing on my blog this week is A Love Restored by Kelly Goshorn but I’m currently reading The Abolitionist’s Daughter by Kathleen Maher so I’ll share the first line of that here: “The wrong ideas could get a head–and a body–into a heap of trouble.” Hope you have a great weekend with plenty of quality reading time! 🙂
