Greetings first liners! I seem to have developed a bit of a theme today. You see, around our house lately, it’s been ‘strains of flu’. Seriously, I. Have. Had it! Enough already! But it segues nicely into the book I’m featuring today, called Strains of Silence. (Okay, so it’s a tenuous connection at best, but give me a break. I’m sick!)
This is author Bethany Kaczmarek’s debut release, which officially releases on 1 August 2017, but you can get it on Kindle from today! If you want to learn more about Bethany and get a sneak peak at chapter one, make sure you check out this post at RelzReviewz.
~ About the Book ~
Music was her driving passion and the truest expression of her faith, but three months before her wedding, twenty-year-old Kasia Bernolak can’t even pick up her guitar. Feeling like a fraud who will ruin her dad’s pastoral reputation, she can barely meet his eyes. When Kasia finds the strength to break off her engagement, she still doesn’t realize the dangerous truth: Blake Hamilton isn’t ready to say goodbye. And he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her.
Alexander “Zan” Maddox has seen what a domineering man can do to an unsuspecting woman, and Zan is sick of injustice. He gave up a college baseball scholarship so he could protect his sister from her abusive husband. When he rescues Kasia from her ex-fiancé, he instinctively appoints himself her personal bodyguard. Now, all he has to do is keep from falling for her himself.
Kasia and Zan become fast friends, but true healing and justice might cost more than either of them is willing to pay.
~ First Line ~
“Kasia Bernolak’s fiancé waited for her back on campus. She could allow that thought, thick and smothering, to choke her. Or she could fight it.”
Yes, that’s technically more than the first line, but I think you’ll agree the extra sentences add a lot more meaning to the first, yes? I’ve heard lots of good things about this book, so I’m looking forward to reading it soon!

Good morning. Feel better soon! 🙂
My first line is from “A Note Yet Unsung,” by Tamera Alexander.
“Rebekah Carrington stood shivering across the street from her childhood home, satchel heavy in hand, cloak dusted with snow.”
I’m going to start reading this book today!
Thank you ❤️ Love Tamera’s books!
Bethany is a new author to me. My first line is from Sweet Delights by Cecelia Dowdy: “PATTY-LYNN?” THE FAMILIAR VOICE made her pause.
Hmm… Intriguingly!
I’m sharing a first line from The Red Door Inn by Liz Johnson. “The change in Marie Carrington’s pocket wouldn’t pay for a ferry ride across the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island, let alone a bus ticket to anywhere else in the world.”
I loved that book!
Happy Friday!

The first execution I attended wasn’t by lethal injection but by Old Sparky. ~A Twist of the Knife by Becky Masterman
Happy Reading!

Well! That certainly got my attention!
Mysterious first line….brilliant. I wonder what Kasia is thinking? Happy Friday!
I’m looking forward to finding out. 🙂
I hope all in your home are better soon!
Thank you!
Happy Friday!
My first line comes from Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels. It’s part of the Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands Romance Collection.
Turtle Springs, Kansas

Pa had some kind of nerve, up and dying like that-just when I’d gotten used to Frank being gone.
Lol! The nerve!
I want to read it too!
This is a very “English teacher” first line today. Sorry! 🙂 The book closest to me is Mockingbird Songs: My Friendship with Harper Lee–(the author of my very favorite ever novel To Kill a Mockingbird): “In an opinion column published by Alabama newspapers in July 1992, I paid tribute to the remarkable Lee family of Monroeville, especially Harper.”
You’re allowed to be very English teacher! And I love To Kill a Mockingbird, too. I need to read that again!
I hope you get over it soon. My daughter has had the crud making the rounds in her house too.
My first line is from Gabrielle Meyer’s novella found in the Of Rags and Riches Romance Collection
“A Tale of Two Hearts” Little Falls, Minnesota May 20, 1899
The countryside sped by as Elijah Boyer pushed the Duryea Motor Wagon to twenty-five miles per hour.
It’s not fun. And it lingers… Meanwhile, I love that things ‘sped’ by at 25 miles an hour! 😄
