Greetings, fellow word nerds! I couldn’t resist sharing today’s word after thestoryenthusiast shared it with me in last week’s comments. It paints such a great picture, I think we need to have the English equivalent. The word is: quidnunc.
As soon as I looked at the word, my Latin knowledge broke the word into its two obvious parts. quid = what; and nunc = now. Therefore, quidnunc equals ‘what now’.
Hmmm…. Didn’t exactly help me work out what the word meant. Was it the Latin equivalent of ‘huh?’ 😆
Not exactly. But the real answer turned out to be even better. A quidnunc is an inquisitive and gossipy person. Doesn’t that just paint a great picture? It’s kind of like the seagulls in Finding Nemo all calling out ‘Mine! Mine! Mine!’, except it’s more like a brood of chatty hens running around the coop and squawking ‘What now? What now? What now?’ 😆
hahaha! The world is full of them!!! 🙂
Too true! 😄
Aren’t words fun?! I discovered quidnunc in a book series recommended by Rachel McMillian. The Amory Ames mystery series is similar to the Drew Farthering series and I’ve discovered a few other new to me words reading about Amory’s adventures. Thanks for the shout out.
Ooh. Now I’ll have to check out the series too. Thanks for sharing such a great word! 🙂
Hmmmm, I’ll have to find a way to work “quidnunc” into a conversation. 😀
Let me know how it goes!
