Top Ten Tuesday – Ten Classic Covers That Aren’t So Classic

Happy Tuesday, reading friends. It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post, thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week’s prompt is a cover freebie, which left me stumped for quite some time…until I thought about some of the, shall we say, not-so-classic covers I’ve seen for Kindle editions of classic novels. I don’t mind telling you I’ve let out a snort or two while putting together today’s post, because some of these covers are just…well, I’ll let you decide for yourself!

First off is a version of Pride and Prejudice that would seem to feature the moon a little more prominently than I recall from my last reading. When it comes to the cover for The Blue Castle, I do give the cover designer props for taking a cue from the title, but…yeah, nah. Not even close. And that cover for Wuthering Heights…well, I’m not even sure what to say about that one.

I probably spent far too long studying this cover for Great Expectations trying to work out whether there was actually some kind of symbolism to the hands here, but I’m not coming up with anything. Anyone else got any clues? And Anne’s House of Dreams? Well, I suppose there is a house in the picture…

I have to say, the cover for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland isn’t so bad as far as covers go—certainly not compared to the other covers in this post!—but I think the designer may have had a different concept of Wonderland—more “Mary Poppins through the chalk pavement” and less “Off with her head.”

Meanwhile, Hester Prynne will be relieved to know that The Scarlet Letter will be now sent by email. Presumably she can just hit the unsubscribe button at the bottom and never have to worry about it again.

As for that young rascal Tom Sawyer, I’m sure you’ll all be pleased to note that, according to this cover, he will be taking his trusty bottled spring water with him on his adventures.

Okay, these last two were where the snorts came in. For some reason these covers just set me off. I mean, at least Wives and Daughters has two women in the picture, but WHAT is that cover for Middlemarch all about?

Found any not-so-classic covers lately?

A great idea! There are definitely some covers in their that don’t make sense. For instance, why does the “Alice in Wonderland” cover seem to have a Christmas or Winter theme to it? I would have to dub that cover not-so-classic as well! I went with a Dean Koontz theme for my top ten book covers. They are colorful and imbue the passing eye with intrigue.
