Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday post, coordinated by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is Outrageous/Crazy/Uncharacteristic Things I’ve Done for the Love of Books, but I’m not sure you could really call any of the things I could think of outrageous or crazy, so I’ve downgraded the topic a little so that I can share a few bookish facts about me. Whether any of them tip into outrageous or crazy territory, I’ll leave to you to decide!
Many readers can identify with having stayed up into the wee small hours of the morning to finish a book, but I once went on a three-day bender! When I was in my teens, I discovered Bodie Thoene’s Zion Chronicles and, after waiting almost a WEEK for the series to be delivered, I devoured them over a period of three days. I read until I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore, then fell asleep and started again as soon as I woke up.
Owing to my aforementioned propensity to become completely absorbed in reading, my mother used to keep all the books I borrowed from the library in her possession and allow me to have one per day.
I used to spend quite a few of my lunchtimes in the school library helping to cover new books before they went out into circulation.
I have also been known to do repairs on books I’ve borrowed from the library before returning them.
I was making TBR lists long before Goodreads was a twinkle in Amazon’s eye. In fact, so long ago that I used to type them up on my mum’s electric typewriter! It was basically a list (in chronological or series order) of every book in every series I enjoyed reading. But oh, did it make me happy looking at that list. Nothing much has changed.
I’m a bit precious when it comes to my books. I like them to remain in pristine condition, no matter how many times they’ve been read. Hence, whenever I lent a book out to a friend when I was in school, I used to give an induction course on how to care for my books. No dog-eared pages, no placing the book upside down with the pages still open, and DEFINITELY no bending the cover around on itself!
I ALWAYS have my Kindle with me. After all, imagine if the car broke down and you had nothing to read while you were waiting for the tow truck?! And I’d like to point out that I have been fully vindicated in this practice since I found myself in precisely this position about six months ago. I got in a good hour of reading before the tow truck arrived. 🙂
I am a pro at swiping the page on my Kindle with the knuckle at the base of my middle finger while wearing rubber gloves. Because how else are you supposed to turn the page when you’re doing the dishes and the Kindle is on the windowsill in front of you? #lifeskills (I do occasionally cheat and listen to an audio book. It just depends on what I’m most engrossed in at the time.)
So there you have it. Not quite ten, and obviously I’m a little more on the obsessive side than the crazy/outrageous side. But I’d love to know if you’ve ever done anything crazy or outrageous in the name of book love.
I’m with you on numbers 4, 6, and 7 🙂
Repairing library books, aw that is so cute. I love that – I wouldn’t know how to do that but it’s a great idea.
#6! I rarely lend books to others simply because I’m afraid of the condition the books will be returned in! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday
How often do you repair library books? I’d never thought to do that!
My post.
I like to keep my books in great condition too. It’s what makes me so iffy about sharing them and lending them to friends.

haha love this!
Not quite #1, but after I got to about page 50 of Divergent for the first time, I finished the entire rest of the series in two days. I finished Divergent after work and started on Insurgent, went to bed, got up, finished Insurgent and Allegiant the next day (well, it was like 4 or 5 AM, but still).
Love your list! I loan books, but don’t note who has taken them. Unfortunately, that means some of my books never make it back home. I once found one in my brother-in-law’s guest room closet. Gasp! I envision my lost books waiting patiently for me to rescue, I mean bring them back home. LOL.
Wow, #8 takes some skill. If I’m doing something tedious, I usually listen to an audiobook so I can use my hands.
Lol. Audiobooks do make chores much easier 🙂
My parents actually grounded me from reading. They said it was making me anti-social. Occasionally, they would also use it to discipline me from other things, since it was the worst punishment they could think of for me.
