Happy Tuesday to you all! This week’s topic from That Artsy Reader Girl has result in several hours of getting lost in some of my favourite reads, because we’re discussing favourite book quotes. And if I wasn’t in the habit of highlighting things on my Kindle as I read, I probably wouldn’t even be writing this right now; I’d STILL be lost reliving some of my favourite bookish moments on the quest for quotes to share. It’s a tough life, hey? 😉 But I’ve managed to rein myself in just in time.
This is by no means a definitive list, and it’s rather eclectic, but here are some of my favourite book quotes:

Quote #1 ~ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis)

“Logic!” said the Professor half to himself. “Why don’t they teach logic at these schools?”

Honest to goodness, I quote this all. the. time. To the point where my husband knows the exact look of exasperation my face gets before I feel compelled to ask the question yet again and says, “Yes, I know. Why don’t they teach logic at these schools?” C.S. Lewis was a huge proponent of a Classical education, which included the formal study of logic and rhetoric among other things, and this was just a little peek at one of his own pet peeves via the Professor.
Incidentally, one of the benefits of homeschooling your children is that you can still teach logic and rhetoric. 🙂

Quote #2 ~ The Promise of Rayne (Nicole Deese)

Character is built on every decision we make, especially those we make in secret.

I don’t often take the time to record my favourite quotes on Goodreads, but when I went to check which quotes I did have, I had SEVEN from this book alone. Needless to say, it’s a good read!

Quote #3 ~ The Phantom Tollbooth (Norton Juster)

If something is there, you can only see it with your eyes open, but if it isn’t there, you can see it just as well with your eyes closed. That’s why imaginary things are often easier to see than real ones.

Boy is it hard to pick just one quote from this book! In fact, here’s the Goodreads page for quotes from The Phantom Tollbooth. Do yourself a favour and have a look through them, because I have never come across another book that combines the surreal and the profound so well. So often I find myself laughing at something and then stopping suddenly with the thought, “Hey, that’s actually . . . wow.” And yes, my thought process is usually phrased just like that.

Quote #4 ~ Crown of Souls (Ronie Kendig)

‘Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.’

Okay, so technically that quote is from Friedrich Nietzsche, but Cole ‘Tox’ Russell quotes this in Crown of Souls (and this idea is integral to the plot), and since I love this series so much, I couldn’t resist including it in my quotes.

Quote #5 ~ Red Rose Bouquet (Jennifer Rodewald)

The point of the Bible was never perfection. It is always redemption.

This is a hard truth for a perfectionist to stomach, but it’s also a beautiful truth. And I think I need it tattooed on my palm or something, so that I can remind myself daily.

Quote #6 ~ Love in Three Quarter Time (Rachel McMillan)

Romance is more than a person. It is a way of life. A way of engaging with things around you, carefully choosing to fill your life with things—buildings, cities, books, experiences—that speed your heart up several beats.

Don’t you love that quote? I do. And if you want to experience that kind of romance (as well as the person kind), read this gorgeous novella set in Vienna.
So, what makes your heart speed up several beats? For me, it’s beautiful music (the kind written before 1900, although there are exceptions!), history, Europe, and great writing.

Quote #7 ~ Shadow of the Storm (Connilyn Cossette)

He slipped the veil off my head and dropped it to the floor behind me.
He leaned close and lifted my chin. “You are mine.” He brushed his lips along my jawline until I shivered. “You are mine here, alone, for seven beautiful days and seven beautiful nights. And I want to cherish you. Every. Single. Moment.”

Speaking of romance… 😍 This is one of my all-time favourite romantic moments EVER! Talk about turning a girl to mush. And it’s even more beautiful when you read it in the context of Ayal and Shira’s story.

Quote #8 ~ Just the Way You Are (Pepper Basham)

I want to do much more than make your pulse race. I want your friendship and your confidence. I want to make you laugh and be your best secret-keeper. I want to capture your heart.

*Sigh* What woman wouldn’t melt at those words?

Quote #9 ~ The Promise of Jesse Woods (Chris Fabry)

The cakes and pies and casseroles beckoned like gastronomic sirens, and there was no one to lash me to the mast.

Folks, that is how to write a good simile. Remember #6 above, when I said great writing gets my heart beating faster? Exhibit A! 🙂

Quote #10 ~ Save the Date (Jenny B. Jones)

He could charm the Depends off an octogenarian.

Okay, this one was just to go out on a laugh. Why use dried up old clichés when you could come up with sayings like this? 😆

Do you have a favourite quote you’d like to share?

I have soooo many, but here are few that have stood out
“Each time you happen to me all over again.” – Edith Wharton, The Age of Innocence
“You see, we so often long for a change in our circumstances. What’s ultimately of more value is God’s ability to strengthen us with power through His Spirit, so that we’ll be able to deal with the circumstances He doesn’t change.” – Becky Wade, True to You
“Help us not hold tight to those earthly things we long for lest You (God) be torn from our grasp.” Tamara Leigh , Sir Durand Marshal’s prayer in The Vexing
“In cowboy world, talking something to death meant six sentences, more or less.” – Ruth Logan Herne, Peace in the Valley

Oh. My. Goodness! I can’t even believe some of my words are up there with such a host of amazing peeps! Thank you. <3

  3. I’m impressed you made a list of top ten. Great word choice is like exceptional music. I liked this quote from The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers. The character Pastor Brian is talking and he says, “Destroy the shepherd and a whole flock can be lost.”

    • I agree! As a musician I’m always sensitive to the rhythm and flow of words, and when an author gets it right, it is absolutely like exception music! Love your quote, too. 🙂
