Happy Tuesday, reading friends! It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post, thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week we’re talking about our resolutions and goals for 2021. It’s a general topic, but I’ve chosen to give it a bookish slant as I have a few bookish resolutions I want to write down for my own record.
I only have five firm resolutions, but I figure maybe that’s for the best; the more there are, the less likely I am to meet them all!
Resolution 1
Read more children’s/YA fiction
My kids are all getting to the ages where they’re asking me for book recommendations, and while we can go to the library and peruse the shelves together, I’m still selective about the kind of content they read. They also tend to have a favourite genre they gravitate to, so I’m looking for ways to broaden their reading horizons. And it’s hard to recommend books when you don’t know what’s out there!
Resolution 2
Read more general market fiction
My blog, in particular, is heavily geared toward Christian fiction, however I discovered several general market authors that I really enjoy in 2020, and so I’m making it a goal to read more general market authors this year in the hopes that I will find some more new favourites.
Resolution 3
Read (and study and watch) more Shakespeare
I’ve always been a Shakespeare-lover, but I haven’t read a lot of it since high school. I’ve seen various live productions when I’ve had the chance, which I really enjoy, but I always find myself wanting to dig into the play and think about the themes and different interpretations and so on, so this year, that’s what I’m going to do. And I started out by watching a Royal Shakespeare Company performance of Measure for Measure with a friend just last night (thanks Marquee TV!) To be honest, I’m kind of (read: really) geekily excited about this resolution. Lol!
Resolution 4
Read more Australian authors
This one’s kind of obvious. I’m Australian, and yet I rarely read novels written by Australian authors. That seems kind of silly. And not very patriotic of me.
Resolution 5
Catch up on some debut Christian fiction authors
There have been some great-looking debut novels release in Christian fiction in the last twelve months, and quite a few that I’m yet to read, so that’s going to be one of my resolutions for this year (and I’ll go into more detail in next week’s TTT post).
Great resolutions! How fun having specifically book related resolutions. I reckon they’d be the sort I could probably keep 🙂
Also, if you want suggestions on YA books, I’ve listed a whole stack of my favorites (both general market and Christian) on my blog (https://wordpress.com/post/hannahcurrie.com/285), and have also written three myself (YA and Australian author!) if you’re interested 🙂 Sorry, in promotional mode since my third book comes out on Friday. Bit hard to turn off this week. Ha!
I’ll have to check out your list! And I did think of yours, but my kids aren’t so much into stories with romance at the moment (not even my 15yo daughter!!) They’re more into fantasy quest type stories, which I’ve read hardly any of. Lol.
I like the resolution to read more Shakespeare. I just announced that March is “Reading the Theatre” month on my blog, so I may be doing that as well!
Which Shakespeare plays were you thinking about checking out?
My post.
Well, all of them eventually. I’ve joined a Facebook group that looks at a different Shakespeare play each month, and they’re doing All’s Well That Ends Well this month, so I figure that’s as good a place to start as any. I’d also love to do Twelfth Night and King Lear, neither of which I’ve either seen or read yet, so they would probably be at the top of my list too.
If you ever want any YA book recommendations, I’m happy to help out!

Great list! I need to work on getting my TBR down (theres definitely some that’s been there for more than two year! Oops.) and good luck with reading more ya books! I’d already done this prompt in another post so I had a go at my top ten favourite albums lol. You seem like you’d have good taste in music, what are yours? Here are mine 😊 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2021/01/12/ttt-12-1-top-ten-albums/
Well, I think I have pretty good taste in music, but I’m almost exclusively a classical music listener, so it’s a bit different to your top ten albums! ☺️
I rarely read debuts so catching up sounds like a good idea. Good luck!! My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/2021-bookish-and-reading-resolutions/
I love that you highlighted Australian fiction. I’ve been trying to branch out from my US and UK dominated reading and I’ve been loving a lot of the Australian literature I’ve been introduced to.
