In a world with steroids and Miracle-Gro, do quick-growth enhancers exist for the Christian life? No. Growth, a very personal component in our relationship with God, involves a right attitude, and a right appetite.

First, there needs to be a right attitude of humility. My heart needs to be humble before God and admit that He alone can make me the person He created me to be. Furthermore, I must acquire an appetite that hungers and thirsts for righteousness. This spiritual appetite for right living is characterized by Bible reading and prayer on a daily basis. The Holy Spirit acts as our coach and personal trainer to take what we invest in and supernaturally empower us to grow in Christ-likeness. Beyond this, time is essential for growth to occur. I am convinced that when we walk in the light of His Word, in the power of the Holy Spirit, over time, transformation will take place.

Environmental factors often provide a catalyst for growth. Christ-honoring churches, small group studies, and seminars and books certainly contribute.

However, saintly lives of persecuted believers show us that none of these are prerequisites to growth. Some of the godliest people I know grew spiritually in spite of conditions that could be labeled as spiritually deprived. Because of their attitude of humility before God and their hunger for Him, they demonstrated a quality of growth that was, humanly speaking, unexplainable.

God does His amazing work to develop us into Christ-likeness in spite of our circumstances—or in light of our circumstances—when we place our attitudes and appetites into His Hands.

Debby Thompson and her husband Larry have served in global missions with Campus Crusade for Christ International since 1974, and are counted among the pioneers of Western missionaries who lived covertly behind the Iron Curtain in communist Poland. In total, the Thompsons spent 33 years in Eastern Europe, witnesses to a period of dramatic social, political and spiritual change. Now living in Cincinnati, Debby is a speaker, writer, and mentor for women around the world.
