Top Ten Tuesday – Emotionally Exhausting Reads

Happy Tuesday, reader friends. We seem to be having a spate of difficult Top Ten Tuesday topics lately, and this week’s topic from That Artsy Reader Girl is no different: Books I Loved But Will Never Reread. The problem is, I love re-reading my favourite books. If I loved it, there’s no way I could definitively say, “but I won’t ever read it again.” However…

Top Ten Tuesday – Books I Meant To Get To In 2017…

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, reader friends. How’s 2018 treating you so far? It’s been a scorcher where I am in New South Wales, Australia, with temps ranging from 39-45C over the last few days (that’s 102-111F), so I’ve been hibernating in the air-conditioning and playing match referee/crisis counsellor to my house-bound children. Fun. 😳 Thankfully it’s cooled down a little today!

Top Ten Tuesday – My Fall (*ahem* Spring) TBR

I’m back to Top Ten Tuesday after a two-week hiatus! And this week’s topic from the girls at The Broke and the Bookish is one of those topics that I don’t even pretend to limit myself to a mere ten books! However, I have managed to be somewhat restrained. Limiting this list to books that are actually releasing between September and November went a long way towards that restraint! And obviously, this is actually my Spring TBR, because here in the antipodes, spring is in the air! September    Read my reviews for Crown of Souls, A New Shade of Summer,

Top Ten Tuesday – Motherhood

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday with the girls at The Broke and the Bookish has a motherhood theme, for obvious reasons. I don’t know about anyone else, but my Facebook feed over the weekend made it clear that Mother’s Day is a day of conflicting emotions for many. For many of us, it is a day of celebration—and at its core, motherhood is a precious gift that should be celebrated—but in this fallen world, it often brings pain as well.

Best of 2016!

Well, you could be forgiven for thinking I have dropped off the face of the earth over Christmas.  I may live in Australia, but December definitely snowballed on me this year.  Please accept my belated wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year. 🎄🎉 Amidst all of the December busyness, I have been giving thought to my favourite reads over the year.  Let me tell you, it is a daunting business, coming up with a blog post about your favourite reads for the year.  For starters I read around 250 books this year 😳  Secondly, different books stick

The Feathered Bone (Julie Cantrell) – Review

Publisher’s Overview “Feathers—no matter what size or shape or color—are all the same, if you think about them. They’re soft. Delicate. But the secret thing about feathers is . . . they are very strong.”  In the pre-Katrina glow of New Orleans, Amanda Salassi is anxious about chaperoning her daughter’s sixth-grade field trip to the Big Easy during Halloween. And then her worst fears come true. Her daughter’s best friend, Sarah, disappears amid the magic and revelry—gone, without a trace. Unable to cope with her guilt, Amanda’s daughter sinks into depression. And Amanda’s husband turns destructive as he watches

Word Painting – The Weight of Sorrow

Sorrow can be a crippling emotion.  One of the things I love about good fiction is that it allows us to experience and learn how to process heavy emotions from a ‘safe’ vantage point – one that involves us emotionally without involving us physically.  It can also be just plain cathartic. The Feathered Bone is all that and more.  I will have a full review up in the next day or so, but I wanted to share one description that elicited a physical response when I read it. With each step my chest caves deeper against my heart. What a
