Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy (Sage Valley Ranch Book 1)

About the Book

An out-of-place writer risking everything to stay. A conflicted cowboy afraid to risk letting her. And one little arrangement about to become more complicated than either bargained for.

For romance author Callie Claston, visiting a Texas dude ranch to save her career makes perfect sense. The harebrained idea to romance a veterinarian who thinks sending her into cow patty landmines is the art of subtlety, however, might qualify her as crazy. Then again, little does he know how much a challenge fuels her. Until it collides with a dream she never expected to be real.

Single dad Reed Allen has at least two reasons—both with smiles just like his—for trying to run off the intriguing city girl hiding a secret. But when he reluctantly agrees to help Callie with her research, knowing he should stay guarded around her does absolutely nothing to prepare him for the moment when he can’t.

Can a writer who’s never found her own ever-after and a cowboy who lost his too soon restore enough faith in love to start a new chapter together?

Excerpt

Two seconds. She’d scaled her suitcase and straddled the porch rail within two seconds of something pecking at her calf.
Breathing harder than the half sprint should’ve warranted, Callie pushed back her hair to find that stinking rooster scrambling to get to her again. “Shoo.” She waved him off with her hat. “Go on. Hey. No, let go.”
The feisty thing latched on to the rope tassel around the hat and pulled in the opposite direction.
She looked from the hat to her feathered attacker and forfeited her new purchase. It didn’t fit anyway.
Evidently, it didn’t suit him either. Black and white speckled wings expanded in the air as the rooster sprang from the hat onto the suitcase.
Callie shrieked. Defenseless, she held her purse between them as a shield. But when the rooster perched himself on the fence and stared her down, she couldn’t help laughing. This bird couldn’t be for real. What was he doing? Challenging her to a cockfight? She patted her head. Surely her post-plane-ride hair wasn’t funky enough to pass for a rooster’s comb.
“Everything all right, ma’am?” someone called behind her.
She flinched again—this time, losing her balance completely. She only caught a glimpse of her purse falling in the opposite direction before landing flat on her back beside a gnome she swore was cackling at her.
The rusty gate clanked together, followed by the thump of the guy’s knees hitting the dirt beside her. “Ma’am?”
The shadow of a cowboy hat stretched across her face just before eyes green enough to make Sage Valley’s hills jealous met hers.
    Tell me I’m hallucinating.
Callie closed her eyes. Opened them. Nope, still there.
    “Are you okay?”
“That depends.” She pulled a snapped bluebonnet stem from her hair. “How much of that did you see?”
The corner of his mouth twitched. “Enough to know you have some guts to take on Elvis.”
Callie blinked at him. “I’m sorry, did you just call that rooster Elvis?” Where in the world was she?

Review

Crystal Walton has a way of taking well-worn tropes and making them feel fresh and engaging, and that’s exactly what she’s done with this novella. Romance author lacking in “real life” romance experience? Yep, read that a few times lately. Father of two lost his beloved wife too soon and is wary of risking his heart again? Well, let’s just say there’s something about that scenario that really appeals to female romance readers. So in terms of broad story structure, are you going to find anything new here? Probably not, unless you’re really new to the romance genre.

Where Crystal Walton draws me in time and again, though, is the combination of humour and heart in her writing and the characters you can’t help but want to spend time with. Take for example the psychotic rooster Elvis, who’s not exactly sure he wants to welcome Callie onto his turf. Or Callie’s straight-talking friend Tricia, who says it like it is: “You booked this vacation because a reviewer with his tighty-whities in a wad claimed your work lacked authenticity.” I seriously have to remember to use that expression sometime!

And right alongside her fantastic secondary characters are main characters who feel as real as the ground beneath your feet. And yeah, I know a lot of reviewers say that about the characters they love, but these characters really are flesh and blood. I’m not sure there’s any better way to say it. The dialogue is natural and engaging—even better, the humour is natural and engaging, whether it’s situational comedy (hello, Elvis!), snappy one-liners, or anything in between. And the romance has that perfect blend of emotional depth and swoon factor. I’m a fan for life.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
