Welcome to First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books! My selection this week is a must-read for historical-fiction lovers, especially if you’ve enjoyed books by Lori Benton or April Gardiner. Jocelyn Green’s Between Two Shores is set in Quebec in the mid-1700s during the Seven Years’ War (French and Indian War), and features a heroine of both French and Mowhawk descent.
About the Book
The daughter of a Mohawk mother and French father in 1759 Montreal, Catherine Duval finds it is easier to remain neutral in a world that is tearing itself apart. Content to trade with both the French and the British, Catherine is pulled into the fray against her wishes when her British ex-fiance, Samuel Crane, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel asks her to help him escape, claiming he has information that could help end the war.
Peace appeals to Catherine, but helping the man who broke her heart does not. She delays . . . until attempts on Samuel’s life convince her he’s in mortal danger. Against her better judgment she helps him flee by river, using knowledge of the landscape to creep ever closer to freedom. Their time together rekindles feelings she thought long buried, and danger seems to hound their every mile. She’s risked becoming a traitor by choosing a side, but will the decision cost her even more than she anticipated?
First Line
I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂
I’m reading this book right now, too! I know it’s historical fiction but I’m gripping the edge of my book wondering what will happen next….Jocelyn Green’s books are incredible!
Happy first Friday of February 💕
I shared the first few lines of Tara Conklin’s upcoming novel “The Last Romantics” on my blog today. I am only about 47% into the book so, here, I’ll share to you the first lines of the chapter I’m currently on.
“With Will gone I searched in earnest for Noni, worrying that she had seen us speaking and that I would be forced to explain. Noni did not recognize boundaries when it came to us, her daughters, our skin problems or boyfriends or job prospects. Her questions were always frank and pointed, designed to elicit answers that contained enough salient information for her critique. Dodging Noni’s questions had become a sport for my sisters and me, a verbal tennis match with Noni always retaining the serve. I could only imagine what she’d do with Will and the kiss he’d delivered.”
I hope you enjoy those lines. Have a weekend full of great reads! 😀
I shared from Never Let Go by Elizabeth Goddard on my blog, but I was going to share from Between Two Shores here, but you beat me to it! Can’t wait to read this book. Green is a favorite. Happy weekend!
I have seen so many great things about this one! Looking forward to reading it very soon.
