Happy Friday, book lovers, and welcome to First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books. I’m in a super busy season at the moment (as evidenced by a deplorable lack of posts on my blog recently!), hence I’m being more organised than usual about our book club read this month. I’m about to start Laura Frantz’s An Uncommon Woman a whole WEEK before book club meets. Yes, you read that correctly. A whole WEEK! None of this starting-it-the-day-before-book-club nonsense this month. 🤣
Ahem. But seriously, we will be getting the keys to our brand new home next Tuesday (a whole month earlier than expected!), so my life has been all about organising tradies (Aussie-speak for tradespersons, eg electricians, floor layers, etc) to do all the finishing touches on our home. Not to mention getting ready to move again. Exciting times!
But enough about me—I love this first line! I’ve spent my fair share of time pondering flounced petticoats myself. 😉
About the Book
Unflinching and plainspoken, Tessa Swan is not your typical 18th-century woman. Born and bred on the western Virginia frontier along with her five brothers, she is a force to be reckoned with.
Quiet and courageous, Clay Tygart is not your typical 18th-century man. Raised by Lenape Indians, he returns a hero from the French and Indian War to the fort that bears his name, bringing with him Tessa’s long-lost friend, Keturah, who disappeared from the settlement years earlier.
Determined to avoid any romantic entanglements as fort commander, Clay remains aloof whenever he encounters the lovely Tessa. But when circumstances force Clay’s hand–and heart–the stage is set for one very private and one very public reckoning.
Intense, evocative, and laced with intricate historical details that bring the past to life, An Uncommon Woman will transport you to the picturesque and dangerous western Virginia mountains of 1770.
