Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! This week I’m sharing a book that features a cast of loveable seniors and the young woman who is determined to keep open the day centre that gives them a sense of community and purpose each day. Open Circle by Stacy Monson releases in just under one week on Thursday 21 June 2018You can read my review here. Stacy has also done a guest post with me today, sharing about the way in which faith has strengthened her writing. You can find that here.

~ About the Book ~

Mindy Lee “Minnie” Carlson’s dream job has dropped into her hands, but there’s a catch. She has four months to revive Open Circle, the town’s only Senior Adult Day Center, or the doors will close, leaving her jobless, and the seniors she cares for stranded.

Meanwhile, after decades traveling the globe and documenting the forgotten people of the world, Jackson Young discovers his beloved Grandma Em is still alive in Minnie’s small town.

Overjoyed, he races back to his hometown to reconnect, and discovers Grandma Em has adopted Minnie as her surrogate grandchild for the past twenty years.

Then Grandma Em has a stroke, and his ideas about her care pit him against Minnie’s determination and expertise. For Grandma Em’s sake, and the future of Open Circle, they’ll need to do the impossible–find a way to work together.

~ First Line ~

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” The pastor sprinkled a handful of fine dirt on the mahogany casket and Mindy Lee “Minnie” Carlson closed her eyes, drawing a slow breath.

A sombre beginning for you today.

I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂

  1. Stacy Monson is a guest on my blog next week, and I’ve just been looking at the description of Open Circle. It sounds interesting, so thank you for sharing the first line!

Today on my blog I’m sharing from Enchanting Nicholette by Dawn Crandall, which is part of the Timeless Love collection. I’ll share the first line from another story in the collection here, Teach Me to Love by Kari Trumbo:

“It wasn’t right to pray he would just die.”

Happy Friday! My first line is from The Love Letter by Rachel Hauck:

    “He must finish. He must.”

  3. My first line this week is from Tricia Goyer’s A Daring Escape. I don’t have a bonus line to share, this week because I borrowed it from my local library and had to take it back yesterday. So, you’ll just have to stop by my blog to see the first line! <3

  4. This sounds like something I need to read. Thanks for another great suggestion.

My first line is from Laura Ingall Wilder’s, “Little House on the Prairie” which I am sharing on the blog today. I’m still currently reading “Just Let Go” so I don’t have an actual first line to share today that isn’t from the blog. 😀

    Happy reading!

    Happy Friday, Katie!

  6. The description is definitely interesting. You can feel the tension already. The book I’m sharing this week on my blog is “Before the Apocalypse” by Taylor Jaxon. This is a Young Adult Christian Suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. Here, I will share the first line in Chapter Fourteen of that same book: “Sam extended his hand through the doorway of the ivy-covered mansion. An appendage the size of a catcher’s mitt engulfed his palm.” Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  7. Looks like it could be a tear-jerker!
The book I’m sharing on my blog today is Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey but it’s also the book I’m currently reading so I’ll share the first line of my current chapter (12): “‘Do you think he followed you there?’ Parker asked, taking a bit of kung pao chicken.” Hope you have a great weekend! Happy Reading! 🙂

  8. Happy Friday!

Today’s first lines come from Finding Wicked by Kathryn L. James

“The day started out like any other, but then I received an email from Cordelia Irwin, the human resources director, and it was tagged urgent.”

    Sounds ominous, doesn’t it!

I’m featuring lines from Nina Lane’s The Secret Thief on my blog today. I hope you can stop by!

  9. I’m reading a novella today, The Treasured Book by Kathleen Fuller. The first lines are a bit more upbeat:

“Lucy Fisher had never been so drenched in her entire life. Still, she managed a smile as her bus drove away.”

    Have a great weekend!

  10. This week, I’m showcasing the first line from The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Here, I will share the first line from the book I just started reading, More Than Meets the Eye by Karen Witemeyer.

I hope you have a great weekend filled with lots of reading time!
