Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. I have something for lovers of Medieval settings today. I’ve just finished reading the first two books in what will be a four book series by Venessa Knizley. If you’re interested, keep a look out for my review, which will be up soon. In the meantime, let me introduce you to the first book in the series, Beneath Outstretched Arms.
~ About the Book ~
The year is 1348—and the Black Plague has reached England. Forced to leave her betrothed behind, Lady Velena Ambrose arrives at her father’s countryside castle, grief stricken—and burdened with fears. She embraces her seclusion, but she is not to remain alone.
Though suffering great loss, Esquire Tristan Challener arrives at the castle, able to find comfort in the Bible that a friar has secretly placed in his satchel.
Velena desperately needs the book that Tristan keeps safely hidden in his room, but is it wise for her to find companionship with a man who is not her betrothed? Will darkness make its abode in her forever, or will she finally be set free to see that God is good, and that there is rest to be had, beneath His mighty outstretched arms?
Beneath Outstretched Arms is the first of four books to be released in this compelling new medieval series, Walk With Me.
~ First Line ~
Velena ran a decent way from the gatehouse wall before finally stopping in an open field—no reason for stopping here, no reason at all. She felt alone, and that was enough.
Well, it’s from Chapter 1 (there’s a prologue), and it’s actually the first two lines, but that’s close enough, right? 😉
I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂
I do love stories in this time period! Thank you for sharing, I’ll have to check it out!
On my blog I’m sharing the first line from Gina Holder’s debut novel “Whither Shall I Go?” so do stop by and check that out! I’ll share with you here the first line of a book that has been on my TBR for several months, I really loved this book!

-Count Me In (An Emerald City Romance #1) by Mikal Dawn
I really need to read Count Me In!
Yes, you really should!! ❤️😘
I don’t see very many books from that genre. This one sounds interesting.
I had the pleasure of reading Holding the Fort so I could review it. From the very first line I was captivated.
June 1885 Wichita, Kansas
The fumes of the gaslights at the foot of the stage protected Louisa Bell from the more noxious odors of her audience.
I really like this first line. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to read it soon!
That sounds like a good book. It’s set in a period that I rarely read. Happy Friday!
I haven’t come across too many books set in this period. Hope you get a chance to read them 🙂
Ooh! I adore medieval fiction. Thanks for sharing this series. I’m so excited to read something new.
So do I! Hope you get a chance to read them.
Happy Friday, Katie! 🙂
My mother’s name was Sarah. – Take This Cup by Bodie and Brock Thoene
Love the Thoenes!
Ooh, this timeline is quite unique because it’s rare when I find a book from this time period. Looks like something I need to read!
I’m sharing about Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar on my blog today, but I’ll share a book that is on my TBR here.
“Come on, come on. I know you’re here somewhere,” Magdalena Henry murmured, squinting through the viewfinder of her camera at the ragged line of coffee pickers sorting their day’s yield.
-Ascension of Larks by Rachel Linden
Yes, definitely a unique time period. Enjoy Ascension of Larks 🙂
This book sounds incredible! And it’s set in England. 🙂 Happy Friday!
Yay England!
“Paris was angry. Viviane de Lussan could feel the fury fermenting inside the depraved souls that lined the cobblestone streets like yeasts ferments in a corked bottle of wine. Soon the bottle would explode into a million fragments, but it would be red blood—not wine—that flowed in the heart of the city.” -Viviane de Lussan from BrideTree (releasing in 2018)
Happy Friday. I hope it’s alright to leave a first 2 lines from a book that I’ve written. Sadly, I don’t have time to read as much nowadays as I used to. (Too busy writing!) 🙂

Definitely okay! And they’re great lines, too. Thanks for sharing!
This sounds intriguing! I love the cover – that’s a beautiful shade of blue.
I’m sharing from The House on Foster Hill by Jamie Jo Wright on my blog, but had to put it down because nighttime and suspense and a need to sleep. So I’m currently reading something a little lighter: Holding the Fort by Regina Jennings. Here’s the first line:
The fumes of the gaslights at the foot of the stage protected Louisa Bell from the more noxious odors of her audience.
Just the kind of lighthearted read I enjoy! The weather forecast for the weekend is looking bright and sunny, so I’m planning to get back into The House on Foster Hill when the sun comes out 🙂
Oh, I know what you mean about Foster Hill. Quite the Gothic feel to it. I’m hoping to get a chance to read Holding the Fort soon!
Happy Friday!
My 1st line is from Shattered Memories by Debbie Lynne Costello:
“Why can’t you have him arrested and demand our money back?”
Oh dear. Sounds like trouble!
Ooh, this series sounds neat! I will definitely be watching for your reviews 😉

Haha. Great opening!
The first line of the book I’m currently reading is: “Who am I?” From His Forgotten Fiancee by Evelyn M. Hill
Have a great weekend!
An appropriate first line, considering the title! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I am sharing the first line from the YA Christian Dystopian novel All Things Now Living by Rondi Bauer Olson on my blog. Here I will post the first two lines from the novel I am starting next, Count Me In by Mikal Dawn:
“The little hairs on the back of Allegra Spencer’s neck stood at attention. He was behind her.”
Oh, I’ve been wanting to read that one for so long! Maybe I’ll get the chance over Christmas…
I read that book just over a year ago and did an interview with the author. The second one is awaiting me on my Kindle. I really liked it, and I don’t always enjoy Medieval Fiction.
I’m very keen to get my hands on the third one now. Glad you enjoyed it.
