If this is your first visit since Christmas, Merry Christmas! And to all, a happy New Year! I’ve spent this week looking forward to all the fantastic books in store for us in 2018. I’ve covered contemporary, historical, and suspense so far, with Biblical fiction scheduled for later today, and speculative fiction scheduled for tomorrow. For this final First Line Friday post in 2017 (hosted by Hoarding Books) I’m featuring my first 2018 release—a book I’ve just begun reading today: Judah’s Wife by Angela Hunt.

~ About the Book ~

Seeking peace and safety after a hard childhood, Leah marries Judah, a strong and gentle man, and for the first time in her life Leah believes she can rest easily. But the land is ruled by Antiochus IV, descended from one of Alexander the Great’s generals, and when he issues a decree that all Jews are to conform to Syrian laws upon pain of death, devout Jews risk everything to follow the law of Moses.
Judah’s father resists the decree, igniting a war that will cost him his life. But before dying, he commands his son to pick up his sword and continue the fight–or bear responsibility for the obliteration of the land of Judah. Leah, who wants nothing but peace, struggles with her husband’s decision–what kind of God would destroy the peace she has sought for so long?
The miraculous story of the courageous Maccabees is told through the eyes of Judah’s wife, who learns that love requires courage . . . and sacrifice.

~ First Line ~

Of the many lessons I learned in my childhood, one made a permanent impression on my soul: God should be feared, and so should my father.

The events in this book take place around 168 years before the birth of Christ and are remembered each year by Jews in the celebration of Hanukkah. Although I know the basic story of what happens, I’m looking forward to this fictionalized account!
I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂

  5. That’s a powerful first line. The book I’m featuring this week is A Cowboy Unmatched by Karen Witemeyer, who I always enjoy. This is part of an enjoyable Archer Brothers series.

That one sounds interesting. My first line is from Karen Kingsbury’s Love Story: Cody Coleman took the football field alone, the way he did most things these days.
