Happy Friday all! I am firmly in the grip of my First Line Friday selection this week: Charging the Darkness, which is the final book in the dystopian trilogy The Uncloaked by Jennifer Rodewald (writing as J. Rodes). If you haven’t read this series yet, you might like to check out my reviews for The Uncloaked and Tearing the Veil. If you have read the first two books in this series, then no doubt you will be as anxious as I have been to read the final installment, which releases this Tuesday, 26 September. You can also pre-order right now for $1.99!
~ About the Book ~
You were not saved for this…
They tore the veil. Now the country is ripping apart. The captive Uncloaked have been freed, and the people now know the dark truth. A rebellion against the Party has begun. But a question lingers among those who are safely hidden in the Refuge—what will happen to their broken nation? Secrets and shame, resentment and hatred shake the divided country.
In the turbulence of the fallout, Braxton Luther finds himself in a new kind of battle. Eliza Knight is back, but her heart is not the same. They will be put through the ultimate test as they struggle with the fact that Eliza has the chance to save many, but only if she chooses to do so. Seeing her wrestle with doing what is right only adds to Braxton’s regrets, and when he finally tells her the truth about her capture, they discover how painful betrayal can be.
Ultimately, she gets to choose. They all do. Every survivor who somehow managed to outlive the cruelty of the Party must choose—what will they do with what they believe?
Braxton’s and Eliza’s answers could change the fate of the shattering nation.
~ First Line ~
Am I awake? Is this a dream?
More like a nightmare! And yet this series has been so inspiring, challenging me: What will I do with what I believe?
What will you do with what you believe?
Before I go, something a little cheerier. Change is in the wind!
Stay tuned for more!

A Christian dystopian trilogy? How have I not heard about this before now? Off to Amazon …
Oh, yes. I’m sharing from Hold the Light by April McGowan over on my blog today. I’ve just started reading what I’m told is an excellent writing craft book, Understanding Show, Don’t Tell by Janice Hardy. It starts well:
Show, don’t tell is one of the most frustrating pieces of writing advice out there.
I’m looking forward to understanding it better!
Oh no! How have you not heard about it? Great series!
I think I’ll have to check out Understanding Show, Don’t Tell. Sounds good!
“The Black Tower of Dunnoch,” is my first line from “The Master of Blacktower by Barbara Michaels. This book was published in 1966. This author is new to me. I discovered her book in a stack of used books at a gift shop I was visiting. It’s good. Happy Reading! 🙂
Sounds gothic!
Oh yes. You are correct. I finished it yesterday and gave it 5 stars on goodreads.
I’m reading Jaime Jo Wright’s The House on Foster Hill. “Death had a way of creeping up on a soul, and Ivy Thorpe was determined that when it visited her, she would not be surprised.”
Ooh! I want to read this! Love that first line.
I’m currently reading The Keeper of Her Heart by Stacy Henrie
“It is not proper, Ada. And I will not abide it any longer”
Uh oh! Someone’s in trouble!
Umm-hmmm! 😊
Here’s the line I’m sharing: How dare the stars still light the night and the James River continue to flow, when the one who made Lettie’s life bearable was gone?
This is the first line from chapter 1 (not the prologue) of Carrie Fancett Pagels novella “Love’s Escape” in The Captive Brides Collection.
Oh no. Presumably, things are going to get better for her!
I remember taking a utopian/dystopian class in graduate school. 🙂
I didn’t like dystopian when I was younger, but I’ve gained an appreciation for it later in life 🙂
“If you’re willing to admit it, you probably know me as Raine de Bourgh. Yes, that Raine de Bourgh. Did you blush at the mere mention of my pen name? Yeah. So did I.” From The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck by Bethany Turner. I had to put the whole first paragraph. I’m excited to get started on this book!
Can’t wait to read this!
I’m sharing from An Inconvenient Beauty by Kristi Ann Hunter (finally got my review copy yesterday)!
Prologue “The line between boy and man was never murkier than when a father dies too soon, leaving his son to walk through the foibles of youth while shouldering the responsibilities of adulthood.”
I’ve been waiting to meet Griffith FOREVER! 😉
Happy Friday!
Mrs. Pollifax had attended church that Sunday morning, and her hat-a garden of pale pink roses and green leaves-still sat on her head as she ate lunch in the sunny kitchen of her apartment. – The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax (Book 2) by Dorothy Gilman
Sounds like an interesting hat!
Hi Katie,
This looks like a great read!
Definitely! I highly recommend the series.
I love Jen’s books!
