Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! I’ve just finished reading Jocelyn Green’s upcoming release, A Refuge Assured—a novel of revolution and rebellion and the life of a young French lacemaker who gets caught in the crossfire. I’ll be posting my review tomorrow, but for now, how about I give you a little taste with the first line?
~ About the Book ~
Lacemaker Vivienne Rivard never imagined her craft could threaten her life. Yet in revolutionary France, it is a death sentence when the nobility, and those associated with them, are forced to the guillotine. Vivienne flees to Philadelphia but finds the same dangers lurking in the French Quarter, as revolutionary sympathizers threaten the life of a young boy left in her care, who some suspect to be the Dauphin. Can the French settlement, Azilum, offer permanent refuge?
Militiaman Liam Delaney proudly served in the American Revolution, but now that the new government has imposed an oppressive tax that impacts his family, he barely recognizes the democracy he fought for. He wants only to cultivate the land of his hard-won farm near Azilum, but soon finds himself drawn into the escalating tension of the Whiskey Rebellion. When he meets a beautiful young Frenchwoman recently arrived from Paris, they will be drawn together in surprising ways to fight for the peace and safety for which they long.

Paris, France

Propping open the door to her shop, Vivienne Rivard listened to a distant rumble that vibrated the windows and shivered in her chest. A rumble that might have been mistaken for thunder.
I had to include the first two lines, because it’s that second one that makes the first one so chilling!
I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂
Another wonderful book from Jocelyn Green. Made me research a few historical facts too 🙂
Here’s are the first couple lines of a Love Inspired Suspense I finished recently but haven’t featured: Her head throbbed and grogginess gripped her. She rocked as if on giant waves. (from Thread of Revenge by Elizabeth Goddard.
Sounds like that heroine’s in a spot of bother! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I just want to stay home and read today. You’ve both made me long for an alternate reality.
#sorrynotsorry 😁
I’m looking forward to reading Jocelyn’s newest release! 🙂

A long black train scrapes across Mr. Sutton’s fields. – Into the Free by Julie Cantrell
Happy Friday and Happy Reading!
Jocelyn’s is a great read. I haven’t read Into the Free yet, but if it’s Julie Cantrell, I’m sure it will be a good one too.
I can’t wait for my copy to arrive!
I’m sharing Be the Hands and Feet by Nick Vujicic on my blog today, but the first line that I’ll share here is The Saturday Night Supper Club by Carla Laureano. Loving this book so far!
“Three hours in Saturday night dinner service and she was already running on fumes.”
Happy reading! 🙂
I’m so looking forward to getting to Carla’s new book soon. Thanks for sharing!
I’m nearly finished! This book is absolutely fantastic!
Yes! Glad you’re enjoying it too. 🙂
Ooo! Chilling indeed. Color me intrigued! I haven’t ever read a Jocelyn Green novel, but I hear that I really need to remedy that. 🙂
Yes, you do! You won’t be sorry. 🙂
Wow! Eerie. Definitely pulls you right into the story. On my blog, I’m featuring Serendipity by one of my favorite authors, Cathy Marie Hake. Here, I’d like to share a line from the 30th chapter of The Captivating lady by Carolyn Miller, which is the book I’m currently reading. “The hope filling his heart leaked out the next day when he saw the way Charlotte barely looked at him.” May you enjoy a blessed, joyful, and restful weekend.
I loved The Captivating Lacy Charlotte. Can’t wait for Carolyn’s new series!
Happy Friday! My first line is from Kizzie’s Kisses by Zina Abbott:
“Kizzie Atwell felt her breathing become more labored.”
Oh dear. That can’t be good!
My copy of that just arrived this week. I can’t wait to start it! 🙂
I’ll share the first line from my next book on my TBR pile. “The Lost Castle” by Kristy Cambron. I love her books and will read ANYTHING she writes. 🙂
“Crumbling walls were rare, beautiful things.”
Have a great weekend!
Enjoy A Refuge Assured. I just finished The Lost Castle now and am waiting for the jumble of emotions to settle. What a read!
That line sends chills and the desire to find the what is causing the rumble. To day I am featuring a favorite author and one of her books. It is probably number one on my favorite books. Helen MacInnes wrote shortly after World War Two. Her books were suspenseful spy tales. This one covers how words can change the perception on an event or person
Ooh. Suspenseful spy tales. That sounds right up my alley! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Good luck with finding her books.
I have heard such great things about this book. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
That cover has caught my eye a few times and the premise is certainly intriguing.
I’m sharing the first line from Anne Mateer’s No Small Storm over on my blog, so I’ll share a different line here. It’s from A Bride At Last by Melissa Jagears:
Missouri
September 1885
At the sound of running footsteps, Kate Donovan glanced up from dumping mop water in the alleyway outside the school building.
Happy weekend!
Oh my goodness. It’s a story about me! 😄
Love the cover! Happy Friday!
You too!
I’m currently reading Why I Hate Green Beans by Lincee Ray. The first line in the introduction is “I can’t recall the first time I tried green beans, but I do know I have decided to hate them forever.”
I hope you have a great weekend!
She’s obviously never had them fresh picked from my grandpa’s garden! Yum yum!
I cannot wait to read this book. It is next on my to-do list!
Over on my blog, I’m sharing the first lines from the three novellas in A Night in Grosvenor Square. It’s a new Timeless Regency Collection. I’m 1/2 way done, and I’m loving it so much. Currently, I’m starting chapter 5 in the second story, so I’ll share that first line here:
“In spite of Anne’s attempts to distract herself from thoughts of Davis Whitledge, hours of repetitive work allowed her mind to drift.”
I’ll have to check out that collection. Enjoy A Refuge Assured!
Yes, that second line definitely makes the first more suspenseful.
I’ve shared from The Lost Castle by Kristy Cambron on my blog, but I’m currently reading The Heart Between Us by Lindsay Harrel. I’m really enjoying it. Here’s the first line:
“Amy says in order to move forward, I have to stop clinging to the past. But it’s not that simple.”
I’m looking forward to Lindsay’s book. Sadly it’s a little way down my stack as yet…
