Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! The book I’m featuring this week released just yesterday, and I have to tell you, it’s done a number on me. If you love historical fiction, you will get caught up in this story in no time, and if you happen to love Civil War fiction? Well, you’re in for an even bigger treat! Allow me to introduce you to Amongst the Roses by Meghan M. Gorecki!
~ About the Book ~
The War Between the States shakes Margaret Bryant out of her comfortable upper-class life when her father enlists in the Army of the Potomac. Despite being safely ensconced above the Mason-Dixon Line in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Margaret finds her strength tested by opposition from familiar faces and Confederate threats. Will she let a young man from a lesser station into her heart even as war rages ever nearer to the home front?
Restless Connor Doyle sees the war as a way to escape from his family’s farm and his identity as a poor Irishman’s son. His brother, Adam, torn between duty to country and his family, enlists alongside Connor. Adam dares to hope in a future with Margaret when he begins a courtship correspondence from the war front. The two brothers make a vow to protect one another at all costs, but when faced with death and destruction from all sides—will they be able to uphold it?
The three bloodiest days in America’s history bring these three together at Gettysburg and tragedy’s cruelty threatens to tear two hearts apart—and bring two unlikely allies together.
~ First Line ~
“Papa’s home!”
A nameless shiver of dread worked its way up Margaret Bryant’s spine, causing her fingers to shake as she checked the chatelaine watch at her waist.
Do you enjoy Civil War novels?
I’d love it if you’d share the first line of whatever you’re currently reading in the comments. And don’t forget, you can find out what other bloggers are sharing for First Line Friday by going over to Hoarding Books blog and finding all the links. If you’ve got your own blog, why not join in and add your link over there. 🙂

Sounds interesting!
I’m just getting started on reading this book! So far I’m really enjoying it <3
Over on my blog I'm sharing the first line from The Weaver's Daughter by Sarah E. Ladd. Here I'll share the first line from chapter 30.
"Henry winced as he gripped the newel post and pivoted from the stair's landing to the next flight of stairs." — The Weaver's Daughter by Sarah E. Ladd (first line from chapter 30)
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
I need to read more of Sarah Ladd. Somehow, she always slips under my radar. Enjoy Meghan’s book!
What a gorgeous cover! I definitely want to check this book out!
Today on my blog, I am sharing the first line from Chasing the Wind by Paula Scott. Here I will post the first line from the prologue of Romeo and Juliet. It’s the book closest to me right now because I’m currently teaching it to my 9 Honors kiddos.
“Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood make civil hands unclean.”
Have an excellent Friday and a great weekend!
Ah, Shakespeare!
Happy Friday!
I have Amongst the Roses on my TBR pile 🙂
My FLF is from one of my favorites by Terri Blackstock called Covenant Child.
“There’s a question that haunts me in the blackest hours of night, when wasted moments crowd my dreams and mock the life I know. The question is this: How could a child born of privilege and promise grow up with nothing?”
Hope you have a great weekend!
Good question! I have this book on my Kindle, but I haven’t read it yet. That first line makes me want to pick it up, though!
I’m excited to read Amongst the Roses! 🙂
Elin Carlson walked into the barn and everything changed. – Until We Reach Home by Lynn Austin
Happy Friday!
Love Lynn Austin. Hope you get to read Amongst the Roses soon!
yay for Meghan’s book! 😀
My current first line is from Kathy Herman’s Only By Death – “Liam Berne was about to commit murder – at least according to Arkansas law.”
Hmm. The first part is definitely a hook, but then that bit on the end? Boy does that make me curious!
Haha right?
Those first two lines pull you right in. Why does she dread seeing her father? On my blog, I’m featuring Jen Turano’s book, A Match of Wits. Here I will share the first line on page 113 of a book I’m currently reading, The Heaven Answer Book by Billy Graham. “Marriage in Heaven will be on a much higher plane because the church will be united with Christ.” Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Sounds like a good read. My kids are constantly asking questions about Heaven lately, so I might have to pick it up!
I do enjoy Civil War novels, especially those set around where I live in Franklin, TN (Tamara Alexander, I’m looking at you! Although, she writes more post-Civil War)
I’m reading Julie by Catherine Marshall right now. The first line is: “Our 1928 Willys-Knight had been climbing for at least ten miles, one hairpin turn after another, under a threatening sky.”
Have a wonderful weekend!
I love Tamera Alexander too! Enjoy Julie 🙂
This looks like a wonderful book! Happy Friday!
It is! Thank you 🙂
I’m sharing from library books today, since it is National Library Week, so here is the first line from Laura V. Hilton’s Love by the Numbers:
“He was gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.”
Happy Friday!
Well, that’s a promising opening!
I just finished reading Amongst the Roses by Meghan M. Gorecki a several days ago, very good story.
It is now Sunday but here is my first line Friday line from The Redemption of Lillie Rourke by Loree Lough.
Rain sheeted down the grimy window and puddled on the blacktop, and a dozen identical buses lined up in angled parking slots.
Blessings, Tina
Glad you enjoyed it!
