Cast the First Stone (David James Warren) – Review

One case haunts him. One chance to fix the past. One mistake could cost him everything.

Ex-Minneapolis Police Detective Rembrandt Stone walked away from a career he loved—just the price of being sure he can come home to the wife and daughter he cherishes. But he can’t shake the deep regret over a case left behind.

When his mentor, the former Chief of Homicide dies and leaves Rembrandt with a box of cold cases and a mysterious watch, he finds himself thrust into a world he recognizes—a world from twenty years ago—the same world he’s woken from in a cold sweat a hundred times. But is it a dream, or some kind of twisted reality?

If he solves the case that plagues him, and justice is finally served, will it destroy the life he loves?

First Line Friday – Cast the First Stone (David James Warren)

Happy Friday and welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. Time-travel is not my normal reading fare, but I have to say I’m super excited for this new time-travel thriller series coming from the combined talents of Susan May Warren, her son David Warren, and James L. Rubart. If you want to know more about the series, make sure you check out their website at rembrandtstone.com. In the meantime, the first in the series released last Tuesday, so you can start reading right now! (After you finish reading this post, of course. 😉) I’m part way through and loving it!

Top Ten Tuesday – Most Anticipated New Releases Jan-Jun 2021

Happy Tuesday, reading friends, and happy new year! It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post, thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week we’re getting excited about what’s coming up in 2021—specifically, the new releases we’re most looking forward to reading in the first half of 2021. I have a mixture of Christian fiction and general market titles this year, having discovered a few general market authors I’m keen to read more from (Kate Quinn, Anna Lee Huber, and Ashley Weaver).

Of course, this is only a smattering of the books I’m looking forward to this year, but I was firm with myself in limiting this list to ten!

Best of 2020 – Emoji Files Part III: The WOW Awards

Hello again, reader friends! Welcome to Part III of my annual Emoji Files celebrating my best reads of 2020. If you’ve missed either of the previous posts to date, make sure you check out The Swoony Awards and Got Me in the Feels.

Normally, the WOW Awards go to those books that kept me riveted with high-intensity action, pumping adrenaline, plot twists, or just some good old-fashioned suspense. And most of the books in this list did exactly that. This year, however, I’ve included two books that don’t necessary meet that criteria: Lu. by Beth Troy and Heartless by Tamara Leigh, both of which WOWed me in their own ways…

Soul Raging (Ronie Kendig) – Review

Sometimes, the only hope is the enemy.

Leif Metcalfe is done waiting for answers and seizes control, a move that comes with a high price and a deadly risk: teaming up with the enemy. He can only hope that what he uncovers will heal the wounds he’s inflicted on those he loves.

Iskra Todorova believes Leif is on a collision course with death and knows firsthand the irrevocable cost of that path to the soul. While trying to protect her daughter and intervene with Leif, Iskra is forced to set her sights on the man behind the evil organization ArC–Ciro Veratti.

Torn apart by injuries and opposing views on how to handle Leif’s act of treachery, team Reaper hunts one of their own. The only thing they agree on is not stopping but starting the final battle prophesied in the Book of the Wars.

First Line Friday – Soul Raging (Ronie Kendig)

Happy Friday, and welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. Last weekend, I barricaded myself in my bedroom so I could dive into one of my most anticipated reads for this year: Soul Raging by Ronie Kendig, the conclusion to her Book of the Wars series. I’ve learned from experience that it’s best to make sure I have enough time to finish what I’ve started when it comes to Ronie’s books! 😉

Soul Raging releases on 3 November, and Baker Book House has a special 40% off deal at the moment, so it’s the perfect time to preorder! And I think this special runs out very soon, so be quick! And keep an eye out for my review, coming soon!

The Gryphon Heist (James R. Hannibal) – Review

Talia Inger is a rookie CIA case officer assigned not to the Moscow desk as she had hoped but to the forgotten backwaters of Eastern Europe–a department only known as “Other.” When she is tasked with helping a young, charming Moldovan executive secure his designs for a revolutionary defense technology, she figures she’ll be back in DC within a few days. But that’s before she knows where the designs are stored–and who’s after them. With her shady civilian partner, Adam Tyler, Talia takes a deep dive into a world where only criminal minds and unlikely strategies will keep the Gryphon, a high-altitude data vault, hovering in the mesosphere.

Even Tyler is more than he seems, and Talia begins to wonder: Is he helping her? Or using her access to CIA resources to pull off an epic heist for his own dark purposes?

First Line Friday – The Gryphon Heist (James R. Hannibal)

Happy Friday, book lovers, and welcome to First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books. My first line Friday selection for this week also happens to be my book club selection. (Yes, I’m racing to finish before we meet tonight via Zoom 😂). Anyone else in a book club that’s had to switch to online meet ups?

Anyway, we’re currently reading The Gryphon Heist by James R. Hannibal, and I have to say I’m really enjoying it, particularly the extremely dry humour that’s laced through what is otherwise a pretty intense read. Perfect balance for me! Have you read The Gryphon Heist? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
