Wow files 2017
Welcome to day three of The Emoji Files, showcasing my favourite reads of 2017 by the emoji they best correspond to. So far this week I’ve had The Swoony Awards and The LOL Awards, and today we’re looking at The WOW Awards: those books that had me riveted to the page and often on the edge my seat.

If I’m Found ~ Terri Blackstock

This is a series you need to start from the beginning (If I Run), but it is soooooo worth it. Casey is on the run, framed for a murder she didn’t commit. The cops say she’s guilty, the private investigator hired to find her has his doubts, and the real murderers will do anything they can to make sure she can’t point the finger. It’s a giant game of cat and mouse, and I can’t wait for the final book in the series, coming 6 March 2018!

Firstborn ~ Tosca Lee

The high-speed sequel to The Progeny, a novel about the descendants of the world’s most prolific serial killer of all time, Elizabeth Bathory. Audra Ellison is hunted for her knowledge and her growing ability to project her thoughts. Fast-paced, full of action, and delivering twists and turns right up to the end.

Rescue Me & A Matter of Trust ~ Susan May Warren

One of my favourite romantic suspense series because of the team dynamics and the man vs nature element of suspense in each novel. Susie May really knows how to bring nature to life on the pages, and she knows how to create fantastic romantic tension between her characters, too. And the series just keeps getting better!

Out of Darkness ~ Erynn Newman

Not only is this great suspense, but the romance is emotionally intense too. Three years after being widowed on her wedding day, Elisabeth is beginning to think about building a new life with her deceased husband’s best friend. Until she finds out she’s not a widow. And her husband’s still not safe. I couldn’t relax until I finished this one!

The Divide ~ Jolina Petersheim

The sequel to The Alliance, released last year. Six months on from an electromagnetic impulse that destroyed the power grid, Leora’s Old Order Mennonite community have fled to the mountains with a handful of Englischers who have taken refuge with them. Life is now a matter of survival, but at what cost? Unique and emotionally and intellectually gripping!

Fault Lines ~ Thomas Locke

I described this book as a battle of wits on steroids in my review—spec ops meets quantum physics on a grand scale. What else can I say? There’s no way I can possibly try to outline the plot in this limited space, but I just have to say Charlie Hazard rocks. Quietly intense, unflinchingly loyal, an ex-Army Ranger, and now a trainer in field techniques for covert operators. Well, until he got caught up in Gabriella Speciale’s research…

Crown of Souls ~ Ronie Kendig

My love of this series—and its author—is about as well kept a secret as the Pope’s religious beliefs. Ronie’s not just a master at spec ops plots and action; she also gets right into the psyche of her characters, and that’s what makes her books some of my all-time faves. This particular series combines all of that with an archaeological mission that leaves Indiana Jones in the dust (in my humble opinion 😉). HOOAH!

The Uncloaked Trilogy ~ J. Rodes

Brilliant and thoroughly engrossing, this YA dystopian trilogy asks ‘Will you stand?’ When holding to Truth could cost you your life, will you hold fast? When you’ve suffered both physically and mentally beyond what the human body should have to endure, how will you respond when the tables are turned and life is suddenly yours to give? I suggest getting all three books at once, because you won’t want to stop!

Rule of Law ~ Randy Singer

Nothing says legal thriller like a military widow suing the President of the United States. When you team up two attorneys who couldn’t be more opposite one another in temperament and tactics, you’ve got a riveting read! This was my first Randy Singer novel, and it won’t be my last!

The House on Foster Hill ~ Jaime Jo Wright

Oh, the delicious neck prickles and spine tingles this novel gave me. One hundred years apart, two women get caught up in the mystery surrounding the house on Foster Hill. Probably best not to read this one at night. It might keep you up in more ways than one!

Born of Persuasion ~ Jessica Dotta

This was my year of discovering a love of the kind of delicious suspense a good Gothic novel can create, and this book was the reason. That and Chance Macy. *shudders* I’m yet to read books two and three in the series, but I can’t wait to see how this story plays out. I’ve been warned I’ll need tissues!

So looking forward to If I Live, Storm Front, and Thirst of Steel to continue the wow-ness of the series! And the Uncloaked Trilogy was incredible. I still have to read House on Foster Hill but I’ll get there! Dani Pettrey’s Blind Spot kept me on the edge of my set as well as Lynette Eason’s Moving Target.

  2. This list is full of favorites and TBR toppers. Some of my very favorite authors are on here. And I’m totally not freaking out AT ALL about being listed with them.

  3. After reading the Progeny last year, I’ve been dying to read Firstborn. Well, I finally got a copy! I also have Jamie Jo’s and Susie May’s books waiting to be read. You HAVE to finish Jessica Dotta’s series. It’s very much an allegory for good and evil and how it affects our walk with God. The conclusion is so powerful and weaves together every single detail from all three books, so don’t wait too long or you may forget something important from book 1 that comes into play in book 3. I literally gasped and sobbed at the end. Actually, I think I’m due a re-read of that series.
